Keeping calm

A 2006 American study asked a group of volunteers to spend 15 minutes either worrying, thinking of nothing in particular, or doing a mindful breathing exercise. The volunteers were then shown images from the International Affective Picture System—pictures chosen to be pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant. The results: those who had been practicing peaceful breathing reported a much lower level of distress when shown upsetting images.

Breathing exercise

Breath control can be used as a general meditation, but it can also tackle stress. If you need to calm yourself, try the exercise below, which doctors and psychologists often recommend. Make a regular practice of this during stressful times, and you should find it easier to relax.
